Learning Goal: You will be able to answer the following question:

What are the thinking (comprehension) strategies?

Reflection:

Explicit Instruction

I Do:

In this workshop, the facilitators went through a PowerPoint to name the thinking strategies we've used so far. This was to build shared background knowledge to set you up to understand Stevi's modeling and to label your own thinking strategies independently.

I Do:

Next, Stevi modeled through labeling her own thinking (from the annotations Wendy wrote down during the think aloud in the last workshop from the text "Last Words"). The instructional goal was recursive teaching: to use a familiar text/idea to revisit in later instruction.

We Do:

Stevi invited you to help her with the labeling and then you had the chance to "try it out."

You Do:

You went back to your annotations on the text "Conversation Piece" and labeled the thinking strategies you used. Stevi and Wendy walked around to check for understanding (conferring). If we found that people needed a bit more instruction, we worked with them one-on-one to build understanding and independence.
